Samsung has announced the release of the latest Android Security Bulletin (ASB) update and its own security fixes in the form of the Security Monthly Report (SMR) for Galaxy devices. This May 2024 security update aims to improve the protection of Samsung Android devices against an impressive number of 55 security vulnerabilities, three of which are considered critical.

Samsung, a recognized leader in the technology industry, has reacted promptly to Android security threats by integrating fixes provided by Google for Android and adding additional fixes specific to the Galaxy range. Samsung claims that of the total of 55 vulnerabilities, 30 are patches for the Android operating system developed by Google, and the remaining 25 are specific fixes for the Galaxy ecosystem, known as Samsung Vulnerabilities and Exposures (SVE). It’s worth noting that among the Android patches, three address critical vulnerabilities that could allow privilege escalation without additional access requirements.

Samsung highlighted the severity of a moderate vulnerability in the Android operating system affecting Galaxy devices, underscoring the company’s commitment to providing quick and effective solutions. By updating OTA (over the air), Samsung ensures that all eligible Galaxy devices will receive these critical fixes as quickly and efficiently as possible.

Among the 25 Galaxy patches, Samsung detailed 12 vulnerabilities, including a severe issue in the bootloader that allows authentication to be bypassed. This could pave the way for attackers to execute arbitrary images on the device, a major security risk for users. The rest of the vulnerabilities, of moderate severity, affect various system components, including fundamental applications and services such as Setup Wizard, Secure Folder, and TelephonyUI.

The importance of this update for Android and Galaxy device users is immense as it aims to protect against potential exploits that could compromise personal data and device security. Samsung points out that 13 Galaxy-specific patches have not been publicly disclosed to prevent them from being exploited by malicious actors before the general rollout of the update.
