We know what the future of YouTube Music will look like. It will serve as a platform for music and podcasts.

Google plans to shut down Google Podcasts. However, this type of content isn’t going away, as the podcast app functionality will be taken over by YouTube Music. Many podcasters also make their content available as videos, so why not? YouTube already encourages podcast creators to make their entire catalog available on the platform, preferably from the very first episode.

YouTube Music will support podcasts

For listeners who have used Google Podcasts, there will be a familiar interface with the YouTube Music app. You’ll be able to listen in the background with your smartphone or tablet screen off, as well as view attached images and download material for offline playback. YouTube Music offers a lot of flexibility here. There are also plans to integrate with Android Auto and different ways to sort playlists.

Another benefit of using YouTube Music for podcasts is the recommendations provided by YouTube’s comprehensive system. It’s not perfect, but it allows listeners to discover new content and creators to reach new audiences. Features like suggesting content to watch for next help in this matter.

It’s also worth knowing that you can add the RSS feed of new episodes to YouTube Music. Currently, YouTube Music does not have its own RSS feeds to make episodes available to other players. This feature is planned. We also look forward to notifications of new podcast episodes and have bookmarked the ones we’ve listened to.

Most importantly, you won’t have to pay for a subscription to listen to podcasts.

Podcasts on YouTube Music will also have a visual aspect, i.e. animation, video or the recording of a “talking head”, which sets this platform apart from the competition. YouTube representatives say this content is optional to watch. Indeed, much of the content is great to listen to, but it’s also great to watch. However, if you look too far, you won’t lose the plot and you won’t miss important information.

Ultimately, YouTube Music should be the only app you’ll ever need to listen to… anything. If you’re interested in the details, listen to the conversation below, where YouTube Music employees describe the upcoming changes and their vision.
