With a lot of active injuries, but also with a series of matches forbidden for the heart – such as the duel with Sharapova (at Indian Wells), with Muguruza (at Wimbledon), with Sorribes Tormo (in Rome) or with Pliskova (in Montreal), Camila Giorgi received the nickname “queen of suffering” from her compatriots.

Always discreet, both on and off the field, the 32-year-old athlete decided to end her career. Although she did not make an announcement to this effect, her absence from Rome (where the organizers offered many wildcards to the Italians) led Italian journalists to do further investigation and discovered that, on the official website of the ITIA, the player appears as withdrawn.

As such, the March match in Miami against world leader Iga Swiatek was the last official match of a beautiful career, in which the player from Macareta won 4 titles, including a WTA 1000. At the Rogers Cup, in 2021, Giorgi was on the tour of her career, eliminating Kvitova, Gauff, Pegula or Karolina Pliskova, en route to the trophy.

This spring, however, after losing 6-1, 6-1 to Swiatek in Florida, the Italian seems to have understood that she can no longer play at a competitive level and has preferred to discreetly leave the scene.

A “little wonder”, Giorgi did not confirm at the highest level

Seen as a “child prodigy”, Giorgi first attracted the attention of Adriano Panatta, when she had not yet passed puberty. “It’s the first time I play against a girl who plays like Andre Agassi,” said the 1976 Roland Garros winner at the end of the 90s.

In 2000, Giorgi came into the hands of Nick Bollettieri, who offered him a free scholarship to his famous Academy. At the time, she was only the second female tennis player to receive such a chance from the legendary American coach, only Maria Sharapova having previously enjoyed such a privilege.

A professional since 2006 (from the age of 15), Giorgi had problems taking the step towards great performance, only in 2012 managing to enter the WTA top 100, after an eighth at Wimbledon. His career was sprinkled with 4 titles and a quarter-final at Wimbledon (2018), but surely he could have made a more serious mark on the white sport if not for the repeated injuries. The first serious problem she had was at the US Open 2013 (where she reached the eighth, passing Wozniacki on the way), so that later she could not even complete a full season due to medical problems.

26 it was the career best of Camila Giorgi, who collected $6.4 million in career prize money.
