“Although it seems like a sad love story, in the end it turned out to be the most beautiful one I know of. Not from the movies, but from real life. I am convinced that the story will shed light as I think it should for such an important person as Bonyhadi for Arad, but also for the history of Romanian sport”.

This is the testimony of the granddaughter of an Arad woman, Elisabeta Şimandan, who in the 40s lived a love story with a great footballer of the era – Ludovic Bonyhadi – as intense as it was suddenly ended by the communist totalitarian regime.

On October 10, 1948, Ludovic Bonyhadi scored his last two goals in the Romanian championship (he had therefore started his third championship in Romania, in which he scored 5 goals in 6 games), right in the goal of CSCA Bucharest, the later Star . Then it disappeared. He was only 24 years old and had a bright future ahead of him. A worrying news from Budapest turned his life upside down. But he will realize that later.

Bonyhadi’s father, Geza, seriously ill, asked his son to come to Budapest, to see him at least once more. He wanted to come back, but he couldn’t

The borders were “armored” and he had no way to explain the “escape”. He probably risked prison! He was never able to get in touch with Elisabeta. They probably wrote to each other, but it is known that “dangerous” letters had a very short journey back then, from the post office to the first security headquarters, where they were read and then burned.
