Klaus Iohannis was the president of the FC Sibiu club, but, together with the flag-team of the city, he experienced disappointments in Romanian football.

The club, presided over by the first man in the state, tried to continue the performances achieved by FC Inter Sibiu, but failed.

Klaus Iohannis was the head of a football club, which wanted to promote to League 1! He left disgusted with the sport led by Mircea Sandu and Mitică Dragomir

President Klaus Iohannis had only one experience in the administration of a football club in Romania, at FC Sibiu. In 2003, when he was the mayor of the city of Sibiu, he managed the destinies of the team financed by the City Hall, together with the businessman, Werner Kreul.

FC Sibiu missed promotion to the second league in the 2004-2005 season, after finishing in 3rd place, two points behind Pandurii Târgu Jiu. This would be the greatest performance of the team coached by Jean Gavrilă.

Although the current president of the country is passionate about football, the team was disbanded in 2007, when it was in the fourth tier of football. Klaus Iohannis stopped the activity of the club, when he considered that there is no suitable environment to achieve performances. The main cause would have been that the club’s employees would have tried to “go over” their duties.

“The mayor likes football, but he stopped the whole project when he noticed the lack of seriousness of the people in the field. They all wanted to run on the City Hall’s money. And he decided to get involved only when there will be a precise legal framework, in such a way that he does not get into unnecessary complications”, said an appropriate Klaus Iohannis, according to GSP.

Inter Sibiu, the most successful team in the history of the city

Inter Sibiu was the representative team of the city between 1968 – 2001. The club achieved its highest performance in 1991 when it finished 4th in Division A, the current Super League. In the same year, Inter Sibiu won the Balkan Cup, against those from Buducnost, 0-0 and 1-0.

In 2000, during the season, the Sibiu team disbanded due to financial problems.

Over time, several famous names in Romanian football have played in the jersey of Inter Sibiu, such as Dorinel Munteanu, Zoltan Ritli, Mihail Majearu, Iulius Cezar Zamfir, Ovidiu Maier or Gică Mihali.

The emblematic coach for the team from Transylvania is Viorel Hizo. The technician started his journey at the club in his hometown.

“I created Inter Sibiu when I was promoted from C to B. The management then made a team over my head, brought players: Șoarece, Spirea, Florin Marin. Old footballers, who came to Sibiu complaining that the training sessions were too hard! I had a conflict with Florin Marin, then I decided not to join the team. After three months they called me back. While I was away, the coach was Bondrea, who was a man to be hurt!”, said Viorel Hizo, according to the previously mentioned source.
