On Wednesday, March 27, Novak Djokovic announced his split from coach Goran Ivanisevic, who trained him for six years, following poor results earlier this year. The Croatian had joined the team of the legendary tennis player born in Belgrade in the summer of 2019, and together they won 24 titles, 9 of them Grand Slam.

In this context, Tennis Channel host Steve Weissman invited former players Andy Roddick and Monica Puig to discuss who will be Novak Djokovic’s next coach. While Roddick pointed to two former technicians from Nole’s career in the names of Boris Becker and Marian Vadja, Monica Puig had a suggestion that caught all eyes, naming Roger Federer.

“It’s a bit shocking, but I’m very curious to see what he’s going to do now. We can even joke and say that Roger doesn’t do anything, maybe it could be a good collaboration”Monica Puig said jokingly. “But I think Djokovic knows what he’s doing. He’s been doing it long enough to know what’s best for him at this point in his career.”.

Puig also stated that Djokovic and Ivanisevic had a recent conflict that most likely led to their split: “It’s not something I would do, for sure. It’s something I would do more in the off-season because you have a little more time to get to know someone, see what works, see what doesn’t work.”she added. “Sometimes the way a coach says something may not suit a player and vice versa”.
