Huawei Pura 70 Ultra is the new DxOmark champion and this shortly after its launch in China. Meanwhile, it also appeared in Europe and Romania, where it is available for pre-order. We’re dealing with a smartphone with a retractable camera here, something you don’t see every day. Plus a 1-inch-equivalent main sensor with variable aperture. Find out below what makes the phone special and how it got this title.
DxOMark top position
At this point Huawei Pura 70 Ultra is number one in DxoMark, with no less than 163 points in the ranking. It surpassed the former champion, Honor Magic6 Pro, which was in 2nd place, with 158 points. In 3rd place is the Huawei Mate 60 Pro+. The predecessor, the Huawei P60 Pro, is not bad either, with 156 points.

The device stands out for its 50-megapixel main sensor with retractable mode. This one, with a 1-inch equivalent and a CMOS that allows the aperture to be adjusted between F/1.6 and F/4.0, ideal for DSLR-style Bokeh. The camera includes stabilization Sensor Shift OISan advanced technique that moves the sensor to neutralize unwanted movements, thus guaranteeing clear images even in moving conditions.
Furthermore, the camera’s retractable mechanism, made up of 100 moving parts, is built to withstand 300,000 extensions and retracts. In addition to the impressive main sensor, the Huawei Pura 70 Ultra is also equipped with a 40-megapixel ultrawide camera with an F/2.2 aperture, as well as a 50-megapixel telephoto camera called the Ultra Lighting Macro Telephoto Camera. The latter is distinguished by its ability to capture macro details superior to those offered by the competition, including the S24 Ultra and iPhone 15 Pro Max, with an aperture of F/2.1 and optical stabilization.
In addition, the 13-megapixel selfie camera with wide angle, F/2.4 aperture and autofocus adds value to this smartphone. Its filming capabilities are also outstanding, offering the ability to record video in 4K quality at 60 frames per second.
Pros and Cons at DxOMark:
We chose from the DxO analysis the strengths of this phone:
- well-balanced exposure and contrast in all lighting conditions, excellent rendering on an HDR screen
- very good-looking colors when viewed on an HDR screen
- fast and accurate autofocus, quality video stabilization
- the variable aperture aperture enables depth of field to be optimized in each scene
- very good texture/noise ratio in most conditions and zoom levels
- natural blur in Portrait mode, nice gradient and accurate subject isolation
- 3.5X tele Macro shots at F/2.1 offer nice perspective and good sharpness
And shortcomings:
- local noise in video
- ghosting in frames with moving subjects, even in bright areas
- quantization of colors sometimes, especially in low light (quantization means reducing the number of distinct colors)
- sometimes unnatural textures in low light and night capture
- sometimes unnatural rendering in tele zoom frames
Scores:
The absolute record for this phone is for outdoor photo capture, where it gets a whopping 180 points. And indoors he is very good, champion with 169 points. It loses points in Preview, where it has 82 out of the maximum of 91. Preview means the way you see what you have captured on the screen or what you are about to capture. He is also the champion in autofocus when filming, with 120 points, the new record.
Artifacts are only worth 75 points per shoot, though. It seems that HDR would be its secret weapon in photography, and in video it was also tested with HDR Vivid format. However, when it comes to low light shooting, it would be below OPPO Find X7 Ultra and iPhone 15 Pro Max.
