Research shows that the sound of waves helps you enter a deep state of relaxation, which promotes rejuvenation of mind and body.

Also, swimming in the sea water causes the blood to be strongly pumped in the abdominal area, the part of the body near the heart – because in those moments you are no longer standing. The freshly pumped blood in the body brings more oxygen to the brain, which means that you become more alert and active.

Here are other health benefits of being at the seaside.

Fresh air to sleep better

If you’ve ever wondered why you fall asleep faster after a day at the beach, the answer is: the salty sea air. It is loaded with negative ions that accelerate the body’s ability to absorb oxygen. At the same time, negative ions balance the level of serotonin, a neurotransmitter responsible for well-being. This is the reason why you feel more alert, relaxed and full of energy after a holiday by the sea.

How 15 minutes of walking can change your life

Sun for well-being and skin health

When you lie on the beach, the heat of the sun positively influences the endocrine system – the part of the body that secretes serotonin – the chemical substance whose purpose is relaxation.

Also, a suitable amount of sun can be useful in the case of skin conditions, such as psoriasis.

Ultraviolet radiation is frequently used to treat skin conditions, says Dr. Rodney O’Donnell, a doctor who is involved in studying the positive effects of the Dead Sea on the human body. A small amount of ultraviolet rays helps to dry the skin, which can thus heal.

If the psoriasis appears on a larger surface of the body, the specialist doctor may recommend phototherapy.

And other studies, carried out at Oxford University, confirm that sea water is beneficial in the case of dermatitis. Scientists wanted to find out which of the compounds in sea water are responsible for healing and they found them: salt and potassium. They seal the affected skin and thus allow it to heal.

Researchers also claim that bathing in sea water improves the elasticity and appearance of the skin.
