The first intelligent speed limiter in Romania was installed on May 6 in Snagov, and just one day later, a road accident was already registered.

According to the Romanian authorities, a driver driving on the county road in Ghermănești, Ilfov county, lost control of the steering wheel, and by the time he reached the area where the intelligent speed limiter was installed, he entered the opposite direction, after which he crashed into the fence on side of the road and stopped in a pole, reports Stiri.md with reference to Stirileprotv.ro.

In his defence, the driver stated that he saw but did not read the sign indicating the presence of the speed limiter and became frightened.

The device has sensors mounted in the asphalt, which detect vehicles exceeding the legal speed limit near the pedestrian crossing where it is located. If this happens it rises, and if the drivers slow down, it descends back to the asphalt.

The limiter is activated at speeds above 30 km/h

Drivers and motorcyclists driving on the county road in Ghermănești, Ilfov county, are warned from more than 150 meters that a pedestrian crossing with an intelligent speed limiter is ahead.

The bumper rises six and a half centimeters if sensors in the asphalt detect a speed greater than 30 kilometers per hour, but lowers if drivers fall within this limit. In addition, the system has a button that pedestrians can press when they want to cross the street safely, and the limiter rises.

The technology comes from Mexico, but was brought to Europe by a Romanian. The installation of the intelligent speed limiter in one direction would involve a cost of 130,000 RON (about 500,000 Moldovan lei).
