Romania will have the first multi-tissue bank: Fast recovery for burn patients

--

Romania could have the first multi-tissue and cell bank by the end of this year. Burn patients and athletes who suffer injuries will have the chance of a faster recovery.

The first multi-tissue bank in Romania that will be created at the Colentina Hospital will offer more possibilities to burn patients, but also to athletes who suffer serious injuries, such as ligament tears, and who need a tendon transplant, reports TVR Info.

The doctors say that the bank at the Colentina Hospital will, starting next year, offer more possibilities to patients.

“In this bank, several types of tissues will be stored – on the musculoskeletal side, bone, tendon, meniscus and so on, on the cornea side, both cornea and amniotic membrane, skin will be stored, where it will be processed and cardiovascular tissues will be distributed, as well as the heart valve, which is so necessary and is widely used in the world,” said Andrei Nica, coordinator of the Tissue Bank, Colentina Hospital.

Romania urgently needs a tissue bank to increase the transplant rate in this country, highlights Alexandru Iacobescu, manager of the Colentina Hospital. Thus, from the center of the Capital, the necessary tissues will be able to quickly reach the transplant centers in the country.

However, there is also a need for teams ready to take samples at any time. Last year, there were 62 brain dead donors in Romania, from whom 137 tissues were collected.
