Easter celebration: Traditions and customs in Romania

Easter is one of the most important celebrations of Christianity, marking the Resurrection of the Lord, and in Romania, the celebration comes with a rich cultural-religious heritage, marked by numerous traditions and customs.

According to the Romanian tradition, the Easter meal is a central moment of the celebration. One of the significant customs is the consumption of the first Easter egg, considered a symbol of renewal and the joy of the Resurrection. According to popular belief, colliding Easter eggs with loved ones brings good luck and spiritual protection, and an unbroken egg can be kept for 40 days, symbolizing blessing and prosperity for the entire year.

In addition, on the first day of Easter, Romanian tradition recommends the consumption of pasca and anafura, considered to have healing powers, and some believers keep pieces of them throughout the year.

In different areas of the country, Easter traditions vary. In Banat, for example, the tradition of incense is practiced at breakfast, and the festive meal includes traditional dishes such as boiled pork knuckle and roast lamb.

In Bucovina, the girls wash themselves at dawn on Easter day with water from the bell tower, and the boys give them red eggs as a sign of affection.

In Moldova, one red and one white egg are placed in a bowl of water, and children wash their faces and touch themselves with the eggs, in order to have a year full of wealth.

Thus, Easter traditions represent an essential element of Romanian cultural identity, bringing communities together in an atmosphere of joy and spirituality during this important holiday.
