He was one of the biggest voices in Romania. His death horrified the country

--

25 years ago, a piece of news horrified Romania. Mihaela Runceanu, one of the greatest singers in the history of Romanian light music, was murdered.

Mihaela Runceanu would have turned 69 years old

Yesterday, May 4, 1955, would have been the birthday of the late singer Mihaela Runceanu, who would have turned 69.

The artist was born in Buzău and music has been a passion since childhood. In a memorable incident, when asked in a store what doll she would like, Mihaela’s eyes fell on a violin and that was her choice, her mother recounted many years ago. Her life followed the natural course: she studied music at elementary school and was a student at the High School of Music and Fine Arts in Buzău.

During high school, he had the chance to perform with the city’s Symphony Orchestra, both in the country and on stages in Hungary and Czechoslovakia. Mihaela attracted the attention of other musicians and the public since that time, starting in 1972, when she participated in the “Buzoian Youth” contest. That evening, he won first prize and received endless applause for his performance of the song “Anilor”, composed by Petre Magdin.

She finished high school as valedictorian

Two years later, in 1974, Mihaela Runceanu was the head of promotion at the high school graduation, and in the same year she was admitted to the “Ciprian Porumbescu” Conservatory of Music, at the Faculty of Composition, Musicology and Pedagogy, in the class of Professor Victor Giuleanu. The step towards light music led her to attend the courses of the Popular Art School in Bucharest, where she was guided by teacher Nina Bercaru.

“From her I learned the love for the beautiful song, for the generous melody, the honest and direct style of interpretation. And also from her, the pedagogical vocation”, recalled Mihaela Runceanu in 1985.

During her student days, Mihaela won numerous awards at festivals all over the country, from Constanța, Râmnicu Vâlcea and Galați, to Bucharest.

She was a teacher for Adrian Enache and Mădălina Manole
