The National Research – Development Institute for Earth Physics announces that, on Sunday morning, an earthquake occurred in Romania. What magnitude was it and where was it recorded.

Earthquake on the first day of Easter

An earthquake occurred on the first day of Easter, in the Vrancea area. The National Research – Development Institute for Earth Physics specified what magnitude it had and at what time it was recorded.

“On May 05, 2024, at 06:00:20 (Romania local time), a weak earthquake with a magnitude of 2.8 ml occurred in the VRANCEA SEISMIC AREA, BUZAU, at a depth of 137.9 km.

The earthquake occurred near the following cities: 53km N of Ploiesti, 54km SE of Brasov, 56km NW of Buzau, 60km SE of Sfantu-Gheorghe, 80km NE of Targoviste, 82km SW of Focsani”, according to INFP.

Earthquakes in the Vrancea area

The earthquakes in the Vrancea area represent a significant and recurring seismic phenomenon in Romania, having a special importance from a geological and social point of view. This region is located in the eastern part of the Carpathian Mountains and is known for intense seismic activity, generated by the subduction of the Eurasian tectonic plate under the Southeast European tectonic plate.

Vrancea is recognized as one of the most active seismic areas in Europe and even in the world! The earthquakes that occur in this area can have a significant magnitude and can generate devastating effects not only in Romania, but also in neighboring countries. This is due to the great depth at which earthquakes occur in the Vrancea area, which can reach up to 150 km below the Earth’s surface.

The seismic activity in the Vrancea area has a significant impact on Romania’s security and resilience to natural disasters. The Romanian authorities and specialized institutions are engaged in continuous efforts to monitor and assess the seismic risks in the region, as well as in the development and implementation of disaster prevention and management measures.

An important aspect of earthquake preparedness in the Vrancea area is public education and awareness of seismic risks and safety measures. Information and preparedness campaigns, including earthquake simulation exercises, play a crucial role in sensitizing the population and preparing them for possible emergency situations.

So, earthquakes in the Vrancea area are a significant seismic phenomenon, with the potential to cause material damage and loss of human life. Constant monitoring and assessment of seismic risks, along with public education and preparedness, are essential to reduce the impact of these natural disasters.
