The head of the National Transplant Agency, Guenadiy Vatachki, stated, after organs taken from Bulgaria were transported by a SMURD plane to be transplanted to patients from Romania, that it is the first sampling from another country this year. Last year there were four samplings from outside the country – two in Bulgaria and two in the Republic of Moldova, and Romania sent a heart and a liver to these two countries, reports News.ro.
“Yesterday, an organ collection took place from a brain-dead donor from Bulgaria. Since there were no compatible recipients on the territory of Bulgaria, the organs were offered to Romania, based on the collaboration protocol in the field of transplantation between the two countries. The team from the Parhon Hospital traveled urgently by plane from SMURD to Sofia, where they performed the sampling and later returned to Iaşi to transplant them, last night”, announced the director of the National Transplant Agency, doctor Guenadiy Vatachki, on Thursday.
He explained that the idea of collaborations between countries for the exchange of organs is so that they are not wasted when there are no compatible patients in the respective country, according to European recommendations.
This is the first sampling from another country this year.
“At this moment, the SMURD Bombardier Learjet 75 plane no. 1123 completed a special external mission, which consisted in the transport of a medical team for transplantation and the organs taken, from Bulgaria to Romania”, the General Aviation Inspectorate reported on Wednesday evening.
The cited source stated that, in less than an hour, the plane’s crew managed to transport the medical team and two kidneys taken for transplantation from Sofia to Iasi.
“The kidneys will go to two Romanian citizens, whose only chance for a normal life is the transplant. Together, all those involved in the execution of this mission formed a team that made the journey from the donor to the recipients go smoothly and in a timely manner,” the quoted source said.
So far, in 2024 there have been 33 brain dead donors and over 100 organ transplants.
