The fourth edition of the Month of cleanliness campaign in Bihor started on Wednesday, May 1. The performance period is May 1 – 31.

The month of cleanliness in Bihor is a project initiated by the Bihor County Council and organized in partnership with ADI Ecolect Group, the Bihor County School Inspectorate, the University of Oradea, the local business environment, relevant NGOs, religious cults and the media.

“We are once again bringing our entire community together to respond to this reality, which is each of us and everyone’s: the need for a cleaner environment. We will continue in two directions, namely the Bihor Cleanliness Championship, addressed to all administrative-territorial units in Bihor county, and the EcoChallenge, a project addressed to students from our county. And this year, because we promised to involve the students as well, we concluded a partnership with the Union of Students from Oradea”, said Mircea Mălan, vice-president of the Bihor County Council.

The Union of Students from Oradea joins the campaign with the Green Wings project, which takes place over four days, between May 9 and 12.

“We saw this opportunity through which we can get more involved in raising the level of awareness among young people. It is a project dedicated to people between the ages of 14 and 35. We will have four days of activities through which we want to combine theory with practice. We will visit EcoBihor and the biomechanical treatment station, we will have a planting action of a thousand saplings at Coada Lacului and a conference on environmental protection. On the last day, we will organize a cross-country race and a party in Ferdinand Square in Oradea”, said Tudor Bungău, USO president.

Entries in the “Bihorean Cleaning Championship” are made until May 10. The contest has a total prize pool of 1,080,000 lei. Three prizes will be awarded in each operating area, namely First Place – 100,000 lei, Second Place – 50,000 lei and Third Place – 30,000 lei. 10% of each award is intended for the award fund of the students who are part of the EcoClubs established at the level of each school.

During the Championship, the following criteria will be taken into account: The amount of recyclable waste collected in May 2024, related to the number of inhabitants in the area, according to data from the National Institute of Statistics; The evolution of the waste collection rate compared to the previous year, measured as the difference between the average collection rate in 2023 and the average collection rate in March, April and May 2024. The collection rate refers to the percentage of recyclable waste collected separately from of the total waste collected.

The EcoChallenge contest takes place between May 1 and May 31 and is addressed to students enrolled in grades I-XII in schools from all administrative-territorial units in Bihor County.

The students will have to go through four stages to win one of the 252 prizes worth 500 lei each, in the form of a voucher to a sporting goods store. The steps are: participating in a sports relay organized in the school where they study, participating in at least one sanitation action, adopting a green space to protect and study flora and fauna and completing an evaluation form.

There will also be 3 special prizes that consist of environmental education camps for students who will be drawn among those who complete all the steps of the contest.

“Compared to last year, we also included religion teachers in this activity, because they can practically present in the classes they have in May, in addition to man’s relationship with God, and man’s relationship with nature. Thus, we believe that we will also generate discussions on this side about what it means to protect the environment”, stated Horea Abrudan, general school inspector.
