The wreck of Costinești, an important landmark of the seaside resort, is deteriorating day by day, and most likely, in a few years, it could even disappear altogether.
GANDUL journalists captured images of the famous ship on Wednesday, and its degradation is obvious, if we compare it with the situation a few years ago.
Following a storm, the Costinești wreck broke in two, and the stern sank almost entirely.
The wreck is one of the tourist attractions in Costinești
The wreck of the ship Evangelia is located in the northern part of the beach of the Costinești resort, quite close to the shore. The Gospel was a Greek ship that ran aground on October 15, 1968, 1.5 kilometers from the shore.
The wreck has become one of the attractions of the Costineşti resort. In addition, there is also a project to restore the resistance structure, renovate, beautify and arrange the wreck as a tourist point.
The ship is over 131 meters long, over 17 meters wide and over four meters wide. Its name, still visible, “Evanghelia” is the fourth that the ship has borne. The vessel was part of a series of ships (Empire) that served the British government.
Costinești – or Youth Resort, as it is also called – began to develop during the communist period and, little by little, through the modernization of old hotels and the construction of new ones, it became an important tourist landmark on the Romanian coast.
Beyond that, however, the Costinești resort has a long history, the settlement appearing right on the old hearth of a small Greek colony called Parthenopolis. In the Middle Ages, today’s Costinești was known as Mangea Punar (n.ed. – Well’s Feast), and in the 60s it appeared on maps under the name Libertatea.
