Do we love our children? A child-friendly Sibiu is good for everyone

--

Arch. Lucian Alexandru Găvozdea, the people’s candidate for Sibiu City Hall, not the political parties

It takes a whole village to raise a child – says an African proverb, known in the rest of the world through its English version – “It takes a village to raise a child”.

When I wonder and ask you if we love our children – I mean us, together. With us, the Sibians – the community.

As a father of two pre-teen girls, I am fully involved in their upbringing and education. My wife and I share all the tasks and worries about our girls – I go to parent-teacher conferences, make sandwiches, do housework, search the closet for pajamas for their friends who are staying overnight, listen to Taylor Swift, and participate in all the girls’ conversations and moments. our will or must involve us.

But I don’t feel that our city is with us, the parents, in raising and educating our children.

A child-friendly city is one where children enjoy public space safely and autonomously. I mean, a 7-8 year old can walk safely and alone at least to school. However, in Sibiu, too many of us commute by car to take our children to school. The deplorable distribution of schools in the city, the lack of connection between where one lives and the school produces three major problems at the same time: children who do not develop in the spirit of autonomy, more traffic and automatic pollution – whose victims are, first of all, children .

Can we make good public spaces for children in Sibiu? Obviously, YES, if we want.

In a child-friendly Sibiu, green spaces, parks and playgrounds are distributed in all residential areas of the city. Mothers don’t walk 2 kilometers through traffic and pollution with their prams to get to a patch of green and a sand pit.

Playgrounds are simple matters to make. I know what I’m talking about, I’m an urban planner and an architect, and that’s what I do. The positive effects in the lives of children, mothers, grandparents are inestimable. But what do you think, is Sibiu City Hall aware of this? Does anyone care?

In a Sibiu that cares for children, they have easy access to culture and medical services.

Do you know how many municipal libraries we have in Sibiu? Zero, none.

Do you know how many municipally supported libraries there are in Jena, a city smaller than Sibiu in eastern Germany? No less than 12 libraries present in the neighborhoods, besides those of the university, of various schools and cultural centers.

The neighborhood library is a place where children can do their homework, socialize, a safe and beautiful place, where they can trust people and the city.

As the mayor of Sibiu, if I win your trust, I will make Sibiu a child-friendly city: libraries in every neighborhood and playgrounds between the blocks so that you will love to spend time with your child in them.

The parties have no way of offering us something like that, as they are busy with party interests and internal scandals – which we have plenty of in Sibiu as well.

What do you think, do we, the Sibian community, love our children?
