Romania can provide energy security for all of Europe. With the completion of the Neptun Deep project, our country will become the largest gas producer in the European Union.

Also, with other large investments in infrastructure, we will get rid of Russian gas for good, say those in the industry.

Even the Commission understood that now gas cannot be excluded, even if we have to meet certain environmental targets until 2030.

The 1.6 billion euro project from the Black Sea will extract gas over three years from the Neptun Deep field and will place Romania among the top global producers.

“The Neptun Deep project is so important due to the fact that it is a state-of-the-art project, we are talking about eight wells that will produce almost all of Romania’s on-shore production.

Given the fact that at the moment there are only three countries producing natural gas in Europe, we have remained this natural gas enclave that must have the power to impose certain limits at the European level as well”, says Răzvan Popescu, general director of Romgaz.

“Natural gas is the future, that is, we have to refer to the world figures and if we look here carefully, worldwide production in 2019 increased by 8.01% and consumption by 6.94%.

In 2020 we had a decrease due to Covid, after which 2021 exceeded 2019. I mean, this means that finally the world understands and industry and healthy economies understand the fact that they have to consume natural gas”, stated Antal Istvan-Lorant , the president of the Commission for Energy in the Romanian Senate.

In parallel, other projects are being worked on that would cut us off from Russian gas.

The main one is the Vertical Corridor which will be able to transport 10 billion cubic meters of gas.

“We are requested in third areas of the globe to be partners of local public authorities, of states, as well as private companies to implement gas pipelines”, said Ion Sterian, Transgaz CEO.

But together with these projects, the environmental targets of the European Commission must be relaxed.

“I think that the perception has already changed regarding the need to look at things more balanced, I think that we will remain in the next period with a strong focus on the transformation generated by the green deal, by the European green pact.

The objectives of the year 2030 are objectives already in the legislation. They must be carried out, they can be renegotiated, the transition can be renegotiated.

It is much better to take gas from the EU, even if consumption will gradually decrease in the coming years, than to import it from outside the European Union”, added Cristian Buşoi, president of the ITRE Commission (Commission for Industry, Research and Energy) of the European Parliament.

All discussions took place on Monday, in a summit organized by Antena3 CNN, on the RO 3.0 platform, “Restart&Repower Romania”.
