National grid electricity consumption hit an all-time low on Sunday afternoon, approaching an incredible 3,600 MW. At 14:43, on April 28, Palm Sunday, Romania’s instantaneous electricity consumption was 3,636 MW, according to Transelectrica data. This figure reflects grid-measured consumption, while actual consumption, which includes self-consumption by prosumers that generate power from their own sources, such as photovoltaic installations, was hundreds of MW higher at the time. Currently, there are over 1,500 MW installed at prosumers, according to Economica.net.

During periods of significant solar radiation, such as Palm Sunday, when the sky was clear, the instantaneous consumption was below 3,900 MW, barely breaking the 4,000 MW threshold by 5 p.m. This historic low of only 3,636 MW, it is the lowest in the last eight years and indicates a downward trend in electricity consumption.

This negative consumption record is the third recorded in the last month, all occurring on weekends, when consumption is traditionally lower. The causes of this decrease include the reduction of industrial consumption and the increase of energy produced by prosumers, which offsets some of the previous consumption from the grid.

Regarding the situation of the National Energy System at that time, national production dropped to approximately 4,000 MW, and Romania exported approximately 380 MW. The Cernavoda nuclear power plant became the country’s main source of energy, while other classic power plants operated at minimal capacity, and some were completely shut down. Some wind farms and dispatchable PV plants are also estimated to have been shut down due to negative spot market prices.
