Today’s event at the Cesianu-Racoviță Palace – the Sacred Art Auction – has a very special episode. The Association of Romanian Art Dealers – ACOAR – and the A10 by Artmark Auction House donate to the Cernica Monastery a Fragment of the iconostasis, “Sunday of the Samaritans”, which may have come from the old temple of the Church of St. Nicholas the Hierarch.

This piece belongs to the Romanian school of religious painting, practiced since the end of the 18th century on the territory of Romania.

10 kilometers from Bucharest, within the radius of the city of Pantelimon in Ilfov County, in places where in the distant past the forest formed a huge forest massif, the old wood of Vlăsia, stands the Cernica Monastery, a place of spirituality, a historical monument of culture and ancient art Romanian. Delighted by the wild beauty of these places and their strategic value, the great vornic of Mihai the Brave, Cernica Știrbei, and his wife, Chiajna, established, in 1603, during the reign of Radu Șerban, a hermitage of monks, which later kept its name: Cernica Monastery.

Among the churches of the monastery, the one bearing the patron saint of St. Nicholas, also called the Great Church, went through the same life events as its people – earthquakes and fires, renovations and repaintings. It was damaged in the earthquake of 1802, repaired in the years 1809-1815, again affected by the earthquake in 1838, when a steeple collapsed, then in 1923 there was a fire, and the church was again capitally repaired in 1925 In the years 1900-1904, the poet Tudor Arghezi was a monk in the Cernica monastery. This is the church that will receive the donation of the fragment of the iconostasis, based on similarities with the documented style, form and manner of decoration of one of the old iconostasis of the church, fragments of which are preserved in the museum of the Cernica Monastery.

The relevance of the church center from Cernica for Romanian cultural life should be emphasized. At the beginning of the last century, the poet Tudor Arghezi was a monk at the Cernica monastery (for four years). There are also the graves of many Romanian personalities, including the painter Ion Țuculescu, the writer Gala Galaction, the philosopher Ernest Bernea, the metropolitan Nifon, the theologian Dumitru Stăniloae, the pianist Johnny Răducanu, the singer Zavaidoc, the actress Stela Popescu, the director Geo Saizescu, etc.

On this occasion, we remind you of the Sacred Art event that takes place this evening at the Artmark Galleries, an impressive exhibition and auction that includes icons signed or attributed to famous iconographers, such as Matei Țâmforea, Pavel Zamfir, Nicolae Cațavei or Ilie Poienaru, or exceptional pieces made in the first workshop in Nicula, but also old Byzantine icons from the time of Constantin Brâncoveanu, which founded a national style. Also, tonight’s Sacred Art Auction includes two collections of old Romanian art, one that belonged to the world bridge vice-champion Coriolan Neamțu, another that comes from the family of the philosopher Emil Cioran.

The performance of each auction hosted by Artmark Galleries is an all-access event. Lovers of art, history or collectibles can bid either directly, during events with a physical presence, or online, after creating an account on the artmark.ro website.

The Sacred Art Exhibition remains open until this evening at the Cesianu-Racoviță Palace (from CA Rosetii Street no. 5) and can be visited with free entry. The Sacred Art Auction will take place both at the Artmark Galleries, from 7 p.m., and online, on the artmark.ro platform, where everyone with an active account created on the website can participate.
