Challenge! Personal motivation! Humanitarian goal! 30 social, humanitarian or ecological causes are looking for partners among those who want to accept the challenge of running a half marathon, for a noble cause, during the OMV Petrom Bucharest HALF MARATHON event – on the weekend of May 11-12, 2024. We learned more details about this event, from Laurentiu Mihai – Multimedia Manager-Bucharest Running Club, guest of Ioana Brușten InComunitate .

“The 10km race is no longer on Sunday, it’s on Saturday and it basically opens the event competitively at 09:00, then at 12:00 it’s the Fun Race, the race for everyone, for two kilometers and a half. These two races also have a category for people not with disabilities, but with different abilities, for wheelchairs. On Sunday, starting at 09:00, we have the start of the half-marathon race and the start of the relay race, which means teams of 3 members, each running 6, 7 km.”

novelty of this edition of the Bucharest Half Marathon

As part of the Bucharest Half Marathon event, both in the summer and autumn editions, races for children were also organized. This year, the organizers are coming up with some changes.

“There are some novelties that we have been preparing for some time. It is the first edition of the event that will no longer have a children’s race. Not because we neglect them, but because we have prepared a separate event for them in September, on September 29. Basically, what used to happen in the spring at the half marathon and in the autumn at the marathon, now we took them and put them in one day, for the children, so that event could also grow.(…) We felt the need to do an event just for them.”

Traffic will be stopped on the routes of this event

For the people of Bucharest, this event announces the stoppage of motor vehicles on the designated routes, but this will benefit those who choose to walk in the respective areas.

“The races will take place on Unirii boulevard, leaving from Constituțieu square to Alba Iulia square. This route will be closed to vehicles, but will be open to pedestrians, and on Sunday the boulevards from the Center to the North of Bucharest, Vasile Pârvan, Buzești, Kiseleff, Calea Victoriei, Câmpineanu, Calea Victoriei, further on, towards Dâmbovița, Splai, Bulevardul Unirii will be closed towards Unirii Square, Alba Iulia Square, up to Bessarabia, next to the National Stadium. What is very important to know here, these routes are already announced, they can be found on our website bucurești21km.ro.”

You can run for a humanitarian, social or ecological cause

OMV Petrom Bucharest HALF MARATHON is an event that has deep roots also in the sphere of humanitarian actions, be they social aid or support for the environment. So, 30 social, humanitarian or ecological causes are looking for partners among those who want to accept the challenge of running a half marathon, for a noble cause, within the event.

“Some run because that’s what they feel, some run for a better result at that distance, which they run that day. Others do it because it’s fashionable or trendy, but there are many who do it for a cause. I think it is the most important reason why someone can run. There are 30 causes that we support and that have been with us for many years, 30 of the most diverse causes, from health causes to education causes, from environmental causes to social causes. They are very, very varied. These causes can be found on our website. Moreover, in the registration form, when I want to register, one of the fields is – choose the cause you want to support – because part of the registration fee goes to these NGOs. “

First aid, in case of need, 2 minutes away

The organizers of these races respect both the regulations imposed by the Romanian Athletics Federation and the International Athletics Federation, the bodies that certify these events, as well as those related to respect for those who sign up and pay a participation fee. This means that runners will find water stations, energy bars and first aid stations throughout the races.

“We are ready. Beyond any regulation, beyond any legal cover, if you have a human who needs help, it must be there within 2 minutes maximum. It is important to have someone close. I was talking about the two minutes, basically an ambulance, in this organizing story, an ambulance or a doctor reaches a runner in no more than 2 minutes, because more than 2 minutes, it might be too Late. If it is not the ambulance, there is anyway someone who can provide first aid until the ambulance arrives, but still within the margin of two minutes. We have to be ready.”
