Having reached the impressive age of 88, Virgil Andriescu remains one of the greatest acting figures to have stepped onto the Pontic stage of the Seaside Theatre.

The actor was born in Botoșani, on April 26, 1936, in the family of Aurel and Tatiana Andriescu.

He is part of the graduating class of the 1963 “IL Caragiale” Bucharest Institute of Theatrical and Cinematographic Art.

By government assignment, Virgil Andriescu arrived at the Piatra Neamț Youth Theatre. Here he received his first role, being cast in the play “Omul cu mărțoaga”, playing Varlam.

After two years spent there (1963 – 1965), Virgil Andriescu arrived in Constanța, joining the Dramatic Theatre.

On the Pontic stage he experienced the peak period of his career, demonstrating his grace and becoming a sacred name throughout the 21 years of “service” to the Dramatic Theatre.

Gil Andriescu, as he is also called, created an impressive portfolio of 90 roles, of which 60 were main roles, in the years he was under the spotlight, in front of the public. We mention here: Mircea Aldea (“Gaițele” by Al. Kirițescu), Bismark (“Credința” by I. Coja), Elio (“Butterflies.. butterflies” by Aldo Nicolay), Pyrrus (“Andromaca” by Racine), Cain (“The Game of Life and Death in the Ash Desert” by Horia Lovinescu), Andrei Golubev (“Between Four Eyes” by Alexandru Ghelman), Solness (“Constructorul Solness” by H. Ibsen), Teodor Karamazov (“The Brothers Karamazov” by Fyodor Dostoevsky), Christopher Columbus (“The Third Caravel” by Iosif Naghiu), Paris (“There will be no war in Troy” by J. Giraudoux), etc.

In 1986, Virgil Andriescu left Constanța and implicitly left Dramaticul, to make contact with the artistic world in Bucharest. Thus, the actor arrived at the Odeon Theatre. Below, we reproduce a fragment from the volume “Sweet Burden”, written by Jean Badea, which is related to the actor’s decision to go to the Capital:

“The capital attracted him not so much for the offer of theater roles, but for the opportunity to make films and television. Which is what happened, Gil Andriescu presenting himself today with an impressive creative record in small and big screen productions.”

The same Jean Badea highlights the period in which Gil Andriescu became the director of the Constanța Theatre, called at that time the “Ovidius” Theatre.

“In the summer of 2002, he won the competition for the position of manager of the Ovidius Theater for a four-year term. He wasn’t going to take it to the end, because the employees of the institution, regimented in a very active union, made pathetic and noisy pressures, from individual and collective protests, to Japanese and… Romanian strikes, which led even to the suspension of some performances, to the spectators going home. That he resigned or that he was dismissed by the City Council is of less importance.”

Recalling again his time in Bucharest, when he entered the world of film, we mention that the actor played in 30 roles, 25 of which were main roles. Some titles are: “The Launch” (1985), “A Handful of Stars” (1987), “The Woman of the Sea” (1991), “War in the Kitchen” (1998), “About a Certain Disappearance” (2005), etc.

In 2017, on the occasion of the Dobrogea Day anniversary, an event organized by the daily newspaper ZIUA de Constanța, Virgil Andriescu was the one who read Charles’ Proclamation and Order to the Army.

Then, in the summer of 2018, ZIUA de Constanța organized the event “Incredible memory of the Constanta theater”, on which occasion the actor was awarded the “Jean Ionescu” medal and the RespectTeatru plaque.

Another award that reflected gratitude towards the actor’s activity was the Lifetime Achievement Award, handed out at the Gopo 2020 Awards Gala. In the same year, he became an honorary citizen of Constanța county.

Referring to the publishing activity of Virgil Andriescu, he launched in the spring of 2022 the book “A life as it happened”, in the Theater Hall of TNOB, in the company of university professor. dr. habil Angelo Mitchievici and associate professor Dr. Aurelia Lăpusan. In December 2023, the actor presented his book “True events with and without cheetahs”, at the “Ioan N. Roman” County Library Constanța.
