The decision was based on the fact that certain procedural errors were committed during the original trial, which represented a major victory for the MeToo movement. Harvey Weinstein was also sentenced to prison following a separate trial that took place in Los Angeles.

During the trial in New York, a series of testimonies related to acts other than those committed against the plaintiffs were “erroneously” admitted in court, one of the judges from the Court of Appeals pointed out. Those statements “presented an extremely prejudicial image” of Harvey Weinstein.

“The solution to these shocking errors is a new trial,” explained the same judge.

Harvey Weinstein, aged 72, was sentenced to 23 years in prison in New York in 2020 for rape and sexual assault.

In 2023, the former Hollywood film producer was also sentenced to 16 years in prison in Los Angeles for similar acts.

The MeToo movement was sparked by revelations about his sexual predatory behavior, with a huge influence on the Hollywood industry.
