CONFIRMATION The owner of Mega Image is launching a tech hub in Romania

The Dutch-Belgian group Ahold Delhaize, which owns the Mega Image supermarket chain, is launching a tech hub in Romania, thus confirming the information previously announced by Profit.ro.

The new tech studio, which will be set up in Bucharest, called AD/01, aims to attract in the coming years approximately 250 high-level technological talents, to strengthen the group’s capabilities in its digital ecosystem.

A similar initiative was taken by the German retailer Hornbach, announced by Profit.ro in the summer of 2023, details HERE), which decided to establish an IT hub, the approach being argued by the well-trained local workforce, Romania having an important say in said in IT.

Ahold Delhaize owns the Mega Image network in Romania, which has almost 1,000 stores.

In 2022, the last year for which there is public data, Mega Image’s business reached 8.71 billion lei, up 16% compared to 2021. Net profit rose 29% to 139.65 million lei.

At the end of October 2023, Ahold Delhaize, one of the largest players in the global food retail market, which currently owns 19 brands globally, including Mega Image, reached an agreement on the acquisition of Profi Rom Food, which operates the Profi store network in Romania, from MidEuropa, for the amount of 1.3 billion euros.

Recently, as Profit.ro announced, Mega Image directly requested the European Commission to approve the transaction, given its size, but the Competition Council requested that the approval belong to the Romanian state.

Cumulatively, the Mega Image and Profi businesses (11.7 billion lei) amount to approximately 20.4 billion lei.
