Saharan dust has a risk of exacerbation in people suffering from chronic respiratory diseases such as asthma, COPD, bronchiectasis, the manager of the “Marius Nasta” Institute, Beatrice Mahler, said for AGERPRES on Wednesday, April 24.

According to ANM, an air mass loaded with particles will persist during the day on Wednesday, April 24, and will move to the northeast.

“Saharan dust has a risk of exacerbation in people suffering from chronic respiratory diseases: asthma, COPD, bronchiectasis, because it can induce crises of exacerbation of these diseases. The risk of being admitted to an emergency room for further treatment increases by 30% for these patients within five days of exposure. For those who are at home and know they are sick, it is recommended to additionally use the medication they have already been prescribed by the pulmonologist for particular situations, such as this one”, said the doctor.

Beatrice Mahler said that people with allergies can also be bothered by Saharan dust.

“People with allergies can also be disturbed. The symptomatology is practically specific to the type of allergy they have: stuffy nose, others sneeze, others have injected conjunctivae. The medication they take from the allergist must be administered regularly and I am convinced that the allergists or pulmonologists for patients with allergic asthma have recommended for each patient the addition of the dose at certain specific, typical moments that bring a risk of exacerbation or symptomatology unpleasant, aggravating,” Mahler pointed out.

Several images of cars covered in Saharan dust have been uploaded on social media. People from Bucharest, Constanța, Tulcea, Ialomița and other cities uploaded photos online, according to digi24.ro.

According to the manager, in healthy people the body has the ability to eliminate the surplus of particles if the exposure is of short duration.

“As a rule, the body has the ability to eliminate the surplus of particles if the exposure is of short duration, and here we are talking about an exposure of several days. It’s a warning and at most healthy people can cough, sneeze, but these phenomena are basically mechanisms by which the body tries to eliminate the surplus of particles it has inhaled”, claimed Beatrice Mahler.

She said that it is not recommended to do outdoor sports at such times with Saharan dust.

“What is not recommended in such moments is to do sports in the open air, to increase pulmonary ventilation, because at that moment the body’s priority will be to oxygenate the body and not to protect the body. It is preferable to avoid outdoor exertion when there are warnings of this type. Otherwise, healthy people have no special measures they should follow,” explained the doctor.

According to meteorologists, dust deposits will be observed in the areas and intervals when there will be precipitation.

Starting from the afternoon of Wednesday, April 24, the air mass loaded with Saharan dust particles will move to the northeast, gradually moving away from Romania.
