Specialists from the Institute for Earth Physics now speak of two causes: a local one, as a result of the existence of local faults in a pre-tensioned area of ​​the Carpathians, and an external cause, namely the 7.8 earthquake in southern Turkey, which was , say the physicists, the last straw that triggered more than 4,100 earthquakes in the Oltenia area in the last year.

The strongest earthquake had a magnitude of 5.7 and took place in February last year, with the epicenter in Gorj. More than 100 schools, churches, blocks of flats, and houses were affected then, writes the Observatory.

In order to better analyze these phenomena, INFP specialists placed eight seismic stations in Gorj county. Last year, 5,000 earthquakes were recorded in Romania, most of them, over 80%, occurred in Gorj.

The earthquake in Gorj county, the strongest in the last 200 years, occurred on February 14, 2023, at 3:16 p.m. near Târgu Jiu.

INFP announced that the significant earthquake had a magnitude of 5.7 and occurred in Gorj, at a depth of 6.2 km. It was felt in Bucharest and in several counties of the country.
