What are bed bugs and how do they “manifest” themselves

Bed bugs are very small insects, which at maturity reach a length of 4-5 millimeters and a width of 1-3 millimeters. Their color is usually translucent (they are almost invisible) and turn brown after feeding on blood.

Basically, the size and color make them quite difficult to notice with the naked eye. They usually take shelter in the seams of mattresses, in hard-to-reach corners of furniture, in books, but their very small size helps them to take shelter in other very narrow and hard-to-reach places, such as cracks in the wall or parquet, in wallpaper or in the false ceiling, in the picture frames, etc.

They can also be present in hostels and hotels and you may find yourself bringing them home with you in your luggage. Also, used furniture can transmit bed bugs from one home to another. It is important to know that bed bugs can survive for long periods of time without food (on the order of weeks), which makes them even more difficult to catch.

Bed bugs often leave small dark spots visible on the bed linen or mattress. They are actually small traces of clotted blood. Most often, insects are well hidden in inaccessible places and are very difficult to see, but if you find such marks on bedding and red marks of stings on the body, it is very possible that you have bed bugs in your home.

Bed bugs lay hundreds of eggs.
