The market price of electricity today, at noon, is 0 lei/MWh. Between 12:00 and 15:00, as can be seen on the website of OPCOM, the operator of the energy exchange, electricity is free.

It is free, but it is exported, not consumed locally, the beneficiaries being companies from Bulgaria and Hungary. Especially from Hungary, where the most hourly quantities go. Given the zero cost of energy, we can say that this is the effect of massive instantaneous input of solar and wind energy.

This, being mostly produced by private companies, can cost zero, because society decides to sell its produced energy anyway, just sell it, because we don’t have significant storage capacities yet.

And if they don’t find demand locally, they send it across borders. A state company, such as Hidroelectrica, Elcen, Nuclearelectrica or the thermal power plants in Valea Jiului and Oltenia cannot give out energy for free, because the directors there almost instantly become a target for the Court of Accounts and prosecutors.

After 3:00 p.m., the market recovers, electricity starts to cost again, and even quickly reaches 80 euros/MWh, at 8:00 p.m., at the peak of consumption, once, according to forecasts, the contribution of renewables decreases. At present, wind and photovoltaic power generation totals nearly 2,000 MW, for a total output of just over 7,000 MW. Wind power is the second source of energy, after Hidroelectrica.
