In 2024, Romanians face the most expensive Easter in the last 21 years. The costs for the festive meal are almost a quarter higher than last year. This increase is due to the increase in food prices in the country, with an average of more than 22%. Thus, those who are already shopping for the holidays notice that specific products have considerable prices. Consequently, many Romanians return home with less full shopping baskets.

However, even in this situation, lamb remains an essential element of the Easter meal, and Romanians look for the most affordable prices. However, the chances of finding good deals are slim, as the price for a kilogram of lamb has risen significantly. For example, at the Mega Image stores in Bucharest, lamb is sold at the price of 49.99 lei/kg, a considerable amount.
Even though prices for lamb in stores are higher than last year, farmers say the trend should have been reversed. Normally, the price of lamb should fall as the cost of animal feed, such as corn, has fallen. However, an increase in prices is seen as demand is high and supply is limited. There seem to be few farmers left with lambs to sell, which allows them to keep prices high.
