20 years ago, Romania had a GDP/capita in terms of purchasing power parity (PPP) of only 26% of the EU average. Now, GDP/capita at purchasing power parity (PPP) is 76%, on a par with Hungary and above Greece (67%), Latvia, Croatia, Slovakia, Serbia and neighboring Bulgaria. But, the picture changes radically when we go into the details at the county level.
The richest county, which is by far Bucharest, has over 260% of the European Union average at purchasing power parity (so over 2.5 times richer than the average), but at the other end of the ranking we find the poorest county – Vaslui – almost 7 times poorer than the Capital, according to a study published by a group of Romanian specialists, quoted by HotNews.
Although Bucharest leads in terms of GDP/capita, being followed by Cluj, in the last 20 years the residents of Cluj have had a rate of development much higher than that of the capital. 20 years ago, Cluj was in fifth place in terms of GDP/person, after Bucharest, Ilfov, Constanta and Brasov. In 2010, it overtakes Braşov and reaches the 4th place, and more recently it also passed Ilfov, sitting in the queue of the Capital. Thus, Braşov is in fifth place at the national level and has a GDP of 60,891.45 lei/capita, while Cluj has exceeded 83,000 lei/capita. Brasov is not “in the top 10” in terms of GDP growth, and before it is Timisoara, with a GDP of 71,842.4 lei/capita or Ilfov with 73,639.47 lei/capita.
Covasna, Galati, Vrancea and Bacău had the lowest rate of development, and Cluj, Bucharest, Sălaj and Timiş had the highest rate.
A high level of fiscal responsibility is registered in Timiş, Constanţa, Cluj, Prahova, Braşov, Bihor and Iaşi, the authors of the document also show.
