The Romanian sports world is in mourning! Horațiu Giurgiu, a legend of Romanian basketball and CS Dinamo, has died. The announcement was made on Thursday, March 28, by Clubul Sportiv Dinamo.

Horațiu Giurgiu, also nicknamed “Bigu” by those close to him, was active as a player at Dinamo in the 1960s and 1970s. He won a total of seven national titles. He later continued his career as a coach, adding another 16 Romanian national titles in all junior categories.

Initially, he began his career as a player on the banks of Crișului Repede, playing in the jersey of the defunct Dinamo Oradea team, under the guidance of another legend of Romanian basketball, Prof. Constantinescu, according to the cited source.

Among the players he launched in basketball are Titi Popa, Gherasim Tzakis, Mircea Ivanov, Cornel Alecu, Nicolae Chiran, Mihai Hălmăgeanu, Uche Iheadindu and many others. Also, Horațiu Giurgiu was a source of inspiration for many Romanian coaches. Among them is Hristu Şapera, the current technician of the CS Vâlcea 1924 team.
