UBBMed – PREVENTION of breast cancer in the UBB Cluj-Napoca community

--

Center for Advanced Research and Comprehensive Approach to Cancer, co-founded by the Oncological Institute “Prof. university dr. Ion Chiricuță” from Cluj-Napoca (IOCN) and Babeș-Bolyai University from Cluj-Napoca (UBB) through the UBBMed strategic program, initiates, under the coordination of prof. Dr. Patriciu Achimaș and prof. Dr. Daniel David, rector of UBB, a primary-secondary prevention project in breast cancer, in a psychological context, for eligible people from the UBB community – women over 40, without an oncological diagnosis, with a work contract or a student at UBB .

“According to specialized literature, participation in screening is recommended for women who have family and genetic antecedents (especially mothers, sisters, daughters), lifestyle such as obesity, sedentary lifestyle, alcohol consumption, smoking, but also for women who do not have have never given birth to a child or have given birth to their first child after the age of 30.

UBBMed – PREVENTION of breast cancer in the UBB Cluj-Napoca community

The approach is both a scientific study – investigating psychological mechanisms relevant to primary-secondary prevention through mammography in breast cancer – and a health service aimed at primary-secondary prevention of breast cancer, addressed to the UBB community.

“Breast cancer is a major clinical problem, for which there are, however, modern means of approach along the lines of primary and secondary prevention and biomedical oncological treatment in a psychological context. Indeed, specialized studies show that the biomedical approach to cancer in a psychological context makes the entire clinical approach more efficient.

As a model for integrating the biomedical approach to breast cancer in a psychological context, we refer to the set of best practices of the Center for Behavioral Oncology at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai (where one of the coordinators is directly involved – Prof. Univ. dr. Daniel David), including the tradition of excellence of the Oncological Institute “Prof. university Dr. Ion Chiricuță” from Cluj-Napoca in the comprehensive approach to cancer” (where the other coordinator of the project is clinically affiliated – Univ. Prof. Dr. Patriciu Achimaș), explain the initiators (UBBMed) of the project.

Within the program, every eligible person (women over 40, without an oncological diagnosis, with a work contract or a student at UBB) and interested in UBB can send, until June 30, 2024, a message to the e-mail address mail: [email protected], where you indicate your name, age, as well as your desire to participate in the study. Also, interested persons must specify whether they will travel to the Center (Str. Aleea Nemira No. 2, Gilău commune, Cluj county) by their own means or request the means provided by UBB.

After processing the data, each person will receive a response (during July), with the appointment date (appointments will start from September) and with a link to complete some psychological and medical questionnaires.

Upon arrival at the Center, each person will go through:

– A session of psychoeducation and medical education, including basic psychological assessment (approx. 15 minutes); the informed consent to participate in the project will also be signed here;

– Mammography procedure (approx. 30 minutes);

– A post-mammography session, with elements of psychological and medical counseling (approx. 15 minutes), including follow-up elements, where appropriate.

Although at this stage we do not anticipate additional questions, the procedure being simple and clear, if nevertheless, by way of exception, they appear, they can be addressed to [email protected], but the answers will be given depending on the availability of those involved in the project, by reporting to the workload”, the UBB Cluj press release states.
