In a balance sheet recently published by the Harghita Customs Office, and made public on the website of the Prefect’s Institutions, it was highlighted that, in the year 2023, mineral water, sewing thread, and lumber were the most sought-after commodities on international markets.

According to official data, a total of 3,378 customs operations were registered last year, of which 2010 were import operations and 1368 were export operations.

According to the customs office, sewing thread and various threads were among the most exported goods, reaching countries such as the Republic of Moldova, Algeria, Brazil, Ukraine, the United Kingdom, Serbia, Tunisia and Turkey. Also, mineral water had a notable presence on the international market, being exported to the Republic of Moldova, Canada, Israel, Kuwait, China, the United Kingdom, Taiwan and the United States.

Timber, an emblematic product of the area, was exported to destinations such as Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates or Sudan. At the same time, wooden furniture reached countries with a tradition for handicrafts, such as Switzerland, Israel or the United Kingdom.

The value of goods exported during 2023 was almost 167 million lei. However, import operations exceeded exports in terms of value, reaching around 261 million lei.

Among the imported goods are various threads and sewing thread from China, Vietnam, India, Indonesia or Morocco, but also cars, vans, motorcycles and agricultural machines. Also, the county received wood charcoal and resinous timber from countries such as Egypt, Nigeria and Ukraine.

As for the furniture items, they were imported from Switzerland, Norway and the United Kingdom. Other notable imports include radiators and refrigerated display cases from Turkey, as well as electronic appliances and household items from China.

Regarding the customs activities at the post offices, the report indicates that 205 parcels were received and 444 were sent. The value of the collected amounts was around 33,000 lei, underlining a constant activity in this field as well.
