Nicolae Manolescu died! The literal critic was 84 years old and died at the Elias Hospital, with several heart and lung complications. Nicolae Manolescu was president of the Romanian Writers’ Union and, for decades, a professor of Romanian literature at the Faculty of Philology in Bucharest. The most famous of his works is “Critical history of Romanian literature. 5 centuries of literature”, a book he worked on for a quarter of a century. In November 1996, he ran for the Presidency of Romania, and for 9 years he was Romania’s ambassador to UNESCO. On December 1, 2008, he received the National Order “Star of Romania” in the rank of Grand Cross.

Nicolae Manolescu died on Saturday, at the age of 84, reports Agerpres. “Nicolae Manolescu passed away! The critic, literary historian and essayist was 84 years old and was the president of the Romanian Writers’ Union”, announced the Vâlcea County Culture Directorate on its Facebook page.

“Nicolae Manolescu was born on November 27, 1939, in Râmnicu Vâlcea. His mother, Sabina Apolzan (née Manolescu), was a French teacher, and his father, Petru Apolzan, a philosophy teacher. May God forgive him!”, the post also states.

The literary critic Daniel Cristea – Enache mourns the death of Professor Nicolae Manolescu. “Another black day for Romanian culture”, wrote Cristea-Enache on Facebook.
