Gingival inflammation – risk factor for myocardial infarction

--

Periodontal disease is one of the most common inflammatory conditions that affects more than 10 percent of the world’s population, being the sixth most common disease worldwide. More than 700 million people suffer from this condition.

Periodontitis (popular – parodontosis) destroys the hard and soft tissues around the teeth, leading to the weakening and loss of teeth, explain the specialists from the CF Timișoara Clinical Hospital.

Studies have shown, however, that the chronic inflammation associated with periodontitis can have a negative impact on the cardiovascular system, increasing the risk of events such as myocardial infarction and stroke. And that’s because gum inflammation can trigger an inflammatory reaction throughout the body, affecting the arteries and contributing to the formation of atheroma plaques, which can block blood flow to the heart or brain.

The magnitude of the increased risk may vary by type of stroke event and may be influenced by age and sex.

Moreover, the severity of periodontitis appears to be correlated with the severity of cardiovascular disease, and treatment and control of gingival inflammation may play an important role in reducing the risk of cardiovascular complications.

It is essential to pay special attention to the health of the gums and to integrate a proper oral hygiene in the daily routine to prevent or control periodontitis and to reduce the risk of cardiovascular diseases, doctors urge us.
