Maybe more than just a cold

Sinusitis is a complex condition that can have multiple causes and affect quality of life in a variety of ways. From stuffy noses and headaches to heavy nasal discharge and pressure in the face, sinus symptoms can be unpleasant and stressful.

Common symptoms of sinusitis may include nasal congestion and difficulty breathing, pain or pressure in the face, especially around the eyes, nose and forehead, thick or watery nasal discharge, headache, toothache, feeling generally unwell, cough and fever.

Why does sinusitis happen?

From viral and bacterial infections to allergies and anatomical conditions, the causes of sinusitis are varied and often complex. Factors such as pollen, dust and exposure to cigarette smoke can worsen symptoms and increase the risk of developing sinusitis.

For some people sinusitis can be a transient (acute) condition, but for others it can become a chronic problem that requires long-term treatment.

Treatments that could prevent or get rid of sinusitis

Fortunately, there are many treatments and ways to manage sinusitis.

Nasal sprays and antibiotics are among the most readily available forms of treatment, especially for acute sinusitis. The options can be more varied, in the case of chronic sinusitis, but can also be adapted according to the individual needs and requirements of each patient (even surgical therapies). The most suitable treatment plan is the one given by the specialist doctor and it is absolutely necessary to talk to your doctor if you notice the symptoms of this condition.

In addition to treating sinusitis, education and prevention are also key. Prevention is always better than cure. You could start by performing proper nasal hygiene, avoiding known allergens, and visiting your doctor to provide you with several options you can take to protect your sinus health.
