Two new films in the series “The Lord of the Rings” (“The Lord of the Rings”) will be released in cinemas

A new film in the “Lord of the Rings” series, one of the most important film franchises of all time, is scheduled to be released in theaters in 2026, Reuters reports.

The project is one of two new films in the “Lord of the Rings” franchise announced Thursday by Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav.

Andy Serkis will once again play the character of Gollum and will direct the first of the two films, whose provisional title is ”The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum”.

Peter Jackson, who directed “The Lord of the Rings” trilogy two decades ago, followed by three films in “The Hobbit” series, will be the producer of the new films.

The films are adaptations of JRR Tolkien’s books, set in a fictional land called Middle-earth and inhabited by humans, elves, gnomes and hobbits.

Previous films in the franchise have grossed nearly $6 billion at the global box office combined. The 2003 film “The Return of the King” won 11 Oscars, including the one awarded in the “best feature film” category.

An animated film from the universe of “The Lord of the Rings”, previously announced and entitled “The War of the Rohirrim”, is to be released in cinemas in December.
