Last week’s suspended shipment consisted of 1,800 907 kg bombs and 1,700 225 kg bombs, the US official told CBS News. Israel has not “fully addressed” US concerns about humanitarian needs of civilians in Rafah, official says.

Overnight, new Israeli airstrikes took place in the Gaza Strip, hours after Israeli forces, backed by tanks, took control of the key Rafah crossing on the border with Egypt.

Israeli shelling was particularly intense around Rafah.

Rafah has been a key entry point for aid and the only exit for people who have been able to flee since the start of the war between Israel and Hamas last October.

On Monday, the Israeli military ordered tens of thousands of civilians to begin evacuating eastern areas near the city of Rafah, ahead of what it called a “limited” operation to eliminate Hamas fighters and dismantle infrastructure.

Meanwhile, efforts continue to reach a ceasefire, along with the release of Israeli hostages and Palestinian prisoners. In Cairo, delegations from Israel and Hamas are to resume negotiations through mediators.

CIA Director Bill Burns is expected to travel from Cairo to Israel on Wednesday to meet with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Israeli officials, a source familiar with his trip told Reuters.
