The tensions and juicy details spilled out in court on Tuesday when Daniels appeared in the criminal trial, facing Trump for the first time in court.

The former adult film star, wearing baggy black clothes and slicked back hair, didn’t look at the former president for most of the day, except when she noticed his dark blue suit after being asked to points to him, according to bbc.com.

She spent much of her time on the stand recounting the sexual encounter she claims she had with the accused – an act that sparked the charges at the heart of the case – and deflecting pointed questions from her legal team.

Meanwhile, Trump spent parts of her testimony cursing and shaking her head. That prompted a warning from the judge, according to court transcripts released later in the day.

The former president faces 34 counts of falsifying business records. The charges stem from an alleged attempt to hide a $130,000 payment to Daniels designed to keep her quiet about the alleged encounter.

He has pleaded not guilty and denies any sexual relationship with her, although he has admitted that his former lawyer, Michael Cohen, paid him a sum of money to keep quiet about his claims.

As the woman who received the money, Daniels is expected to appear in court at some point. But her testimony on Tuesday brought the most dramatic day of the trial yet.

She gave such salacious details about her meeting with Trump that the former president’s lawyers asked for a mistrial. Judge Juan Merchan admitted that “there were some things that would have been better left unsaid” and warned prosecutors not to ask for details of such a personal nature.

The details, which she previously shared, included her claim that they did not use a condom, that she hit Trump with a magazine, and the answers she allegedly got from the former president about his wife.

The trial has already exposed an underworld of tabloid editors and Hollywood lawyers, one of whom was hired by Daniels to broker the hush-hush payment. However, her testimony on Tuesday appeared to be a step too far for the judge as well as Trump’s defense team.

Trump attentive to how Daniels shares her story

Earlier in the day, Trump’s lawyers tried to ask Judge Merchan to limit what prosecutors could ask Daniels about their alleged 2006 sexual encounter and their two subsequent encounters.

The prosecution argued that it needed to ask Daniels about this to establish intent to pay. Despite stricter parameters, Daniels’ outrageous details spilled out in unusually lengthy responses.

This one this is not the first time she has shared the details of her alleged sexual encounter with Trump. Since the affair came to light, she has told her story on national television, in a self-titled documentary, to America’s most famous television journalist, and in his book, Full Disclosure.

But this was the first time she shared it while the man she claims she had sex with was standing a few feet away.

In the morning session, the witness appeared nervous, speaking at such a rapid pace that both the prosecutor, Susan Hoffinger, and Judge Merchan asked her to slow down. At times, it also appeared that her testimony got away from Hoffinger’s prosecutor, who received a stern warning from the judge to better control his witness.

The adult film star kept his eyes on the jury as he took the court back to 2006, when he first met Trump dressed in golf attire at a celebrity tournament. He invited her to dine with him, she recalled.

Daniels told the court that she initially did not want to have dinner with Trump, but her publicist encouraged her, telling her: “‘What could go wrong?’ The line drew laughter from some in the courtroom.

She then described later arriving at Trump’s apartment for dinner, where she said he greeted her at the door in silk pajamas.

Daniels told the court that she later went to the bathroom and when she came out, she found Trump lying in bed wearing only boxers and a T-shirt.

They had sex, she said, and she claimed there was consent. However, she told the court, the encounter left her disoriented.

Trump’s lawyers objected several times to prosecutors’ line of questioning before questioning Daniels.

Prosecutors made sure the court-imposed hedges against Daniels’ testimony were blown away, attorney Todd Blanche said. Her details about Trump were “unduly harmful” to the point where they didn’t think they could be fixed under cross-examination.

“This is the kind of testimony that makes it impossible to come back,” Blanche said.

While Judge Merchan did not grant a mistrial, he largely agreed that “the witness was a bit difficult to control” and said Hoffinger would talk to Daniels about having to be concise in her answers.

The degree of detail we go into is simply unnecessary“, he said.

Trump’s lawyer, Susan Necheles, led a tough cross-examination designed to undermine Daniels’ motives and recollections. The two women were almost screaming at each other at times.

The exchanges became deeply tense as Necheles took issue with Daniels’ statements about Trump, questioned her parenting and insinuated that she had fabricated some of her memories.

“You’re making this up while you’re sitting there, aren’t you?”. Necheles said.

After the trial, Trump told reporters that, in his opinion, the proceedings “it’s going well”.

Every word was heard by members of the jury who will ultimately assess the merits of Daniels’ evidence.

At the conclusion of the hearing, Judge Merchan once again gave the jurors his usual instructions:Please remember to keep an open mind.”
