As the CEO of SpaceX and Tesla, the owner of the X platform (Twitter), and the father of 10 children, Elon Musk is a very busy man with a busy schedule.

According to Forbes, he has amassed a fortune of 198 billion dollars, being the third richest man in the world. Musk said he didn’t get to this point by working 40 hours a week, but rather 120, exaggerating obviously.

But like most regular people, Musk has carved out a daily routine that includes a sweet treat every morning and time spent on social media.

Business Insider analyzed Musk’s interviews and posts to determine his daily schedule.

He wakes up around 9 o’clock and eats a donut every morning

Musk told The Wall Street Journal in 2023 that he usually goes to bed around 3 a.m. and sleeps for six hours. Therefore, he usually wakes up around 9 o’clock every day.

According to his posts on X, Musk is a big fan of baked goods, but says he eats them in moderation.

He starts his mornings with his phone in hand

Musk admitted in 2022 that he had tried to break the habit of checking his phone as soon as he woke up, saying it was a “terrible habit”. But last year’s posts showed that he hasn’t gotten out of the habit and that the first thing he does in the morning is get on his phone and post, being extremely active on the X even before he buys it. It is extremely rare that he goes a day without posting or replying to a comment.

“Some days I wake up and immediately check Twitter to see if it’s working”he said.

Showering is an important part of his daily routine

Musk says that showering has the biggest positive effect on his day-to-day life.

During an “ask me anything” session on Reddit in 2015, a user asked him which of his daily habits had the most impact on his life. And Musk replied: “The shower.”

Does it move or not?

Musk knows that sports are important for health and he wants to exercise, but he doesn’t always get it. In 2021, he told Joe Rogan, a famous American podcaster, that he would avoid exercise altogether if he could.

“I hardly ever work out, except to pick up my kids and blow them up”he later said in June 2023.

But after less than two months, he said that “he lifts weights almost every day.” Around the same time, Musk and Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg began an online feud, challenging each other to a physical cage match.

Sometimes he works all night

Musk has admitted several times that it is not easy to run several companies, and he divides his time between them depending on some issues that arise, he said in 2021.

User X noted in January 2023 that on one day, Musk testified in a trial in the morning, attended an event at a Tesla factory in Nevada in the evening, and worked on Tesla’s AI project at night. Musk responded by saying that after midnight he was at Twitter headquarters on business.

I go to bed, I wake up, I work, I sleep, I wake up, I work – I do this seven days a week”Musk said in 2023. “I’m going to have to do this for a while, but I think once Twitter is put on the right track, it’s going to be a lot easier to manage than SpaceX or Tesla.”

In April 2024, Musk said he works at Tesla every day: “Tesla takes up most of my work time and I work almost every day of the week here. I very rarely take a Sunday afternoon off.”

He goes to bed at 3 and sleeps about 6 hours every night

While getting 8 hours of sleep a night is not a problem, Musk has increased his sleep schedule from almost non-existent in the past.

In May 2023, Musk told CNBC that he couldn’t stand staying up all night anymore and was trying to get at least six hours of sleep.

According to Walter Isaacson’s biography of Musk, the billionaire spent many sleepless nights thinking of solutions to the problems facing his companies. His ex-partner Claire Boucher, known by her stage name Grimes, told Isaacson that Musk also had black nights when new games came out that captivated him.

Musk is known for the fact that when he can’t take it anymore he simply lies down on the floor in his office. He also stayed many nights to sleep in the Tesla factory.

After buying Twitter in 2022, Musk almost moved into the San Francisco headquarters. He had a couch in his office that he often slept on.
