An American and two Australians went on a surfing vacation near the tourist town of Ensenada, about 90 minutes south of the US-Mexico border on the Pacific coast. They were reported missing last week, and after a search, they were found dead in a well. US authorities are advising Americans to reconsider travel to Mexico.

The three bodies found in the Mexican state of Baja California are most likely those of the American tourist and the two Australians who went missing last week, an official from the region said on Saturday, quoted by Reuters.

Mexican authorities are carrying out forensic tests after the bodies were found in a well on Friday, following a days-long search for Australian brothers Callum, 33, and Jake Robinson, 30, and American Carter Rhoad (age 30).

The three were on a surfing vacation near the tourist town of Ensenada, about 90 minutes south of the US-Mexico border on the Pacific coast.

“All three bodies meet the indications to assume, with a high degree of probability, that they are the American Carter Rhoad and the Robinson brothers from Australia,” said the Attorney General of Baja California, Maria Elena Andrade.

Andrade stated that, although the three bodies were found in an advanced state of decomposition, at the bottom of a well more than 15 meters deep, “some physical descriptions give us this high probability”.

Baja California is one of the most violent states in Mexico, although the Ensenada area is considered safer. The US State Department is advising Americans to reconsider travel to this country, due to crimes and kidnappings.

The three surfers were last seen on April 27 and were reported missing days later when authorities launched a search with the help of the FBI.

Three people have been arrested so far, officials say. A burnt out vehicle believed to have been used by the three surfers was found in the area.

The preliminary hypothesis of the Mexican authorities is that the arrested people tried to steal the tourists’ car and when the surfers resisted they were shot and their bodies were thrown into the well, Andrade said.

A fourth body, also of a man, was discovered in the well, but he had been there for a longer time and is believed to be unrelated to this case, added Andrade.
