The two-hour-plus concert, with free entry, marked the end of the artist’s “Celebration Tour”, a giant tour that paid tribute to 40 years of career and in which the queen of pop music played 80 shows around the world.
Around 1.6 million people attended the diva’s concert. “Madonna turns Copacabana into Broadway, combining theater, music and hits,” noted Globo enthusiastically. “CopacaDonna,” wrote Bild.
“I will tell the story of my life. It’s not a movie, it’s my real life and you’re a big part of it,” Madonna announced at the start of the concert to cheers from the delirious crowd.
Previously, tens of thousands of people “went crazy” during rehearsals. In front of the hotel where the artist stayed, the songs of the fans could be heard constantly.
Madonna lived, in Rio de Janeiro, at the “Copacabana Palace”, where the price of an apartment is 5,000 dollars a night.
During rehearsals, Madonna changed her outfits almost faster than her own hits (“Like A Virgin”, “Material Girl”): sexy lingerie, glitter bras, mini thongs.
The artist and over 200 employees traveled to Rio de Janeiro with three planes and 270 tons of equipment.
Costs for this deployment are in the seven-figure range.
According to Reuters, Rio’s central and city authorities said they spent $3.9 million to organize the concert, with the rest covered by private sponsors. Authorities estimate that the event could bring about $60 million to Rio’s economy.
According to organizers, at least 150,000 fans traveled from abroad to Rio specifically for the concert on Copacabana beach, where in the past the Rolling Stones and Rod Stewart have performed in front of millions of fans.
