Egypt’s Al-Rad channel reported that Hamas had dropped the ceasefire condition in the first phase of a hostage deal. Palestinian newspaper Al-Quds says the announcement will come within days, while Al-Sharq reported it will come within hours.
Qatar’s Al-Araby Al-Jadeed announced that the talks that took place on Saturday had ended “without a final result” and would continue on Sunday.
“Hamas has questions to which it wants answers,” the Qatari publication wrote. “This is done in coordination with all parties. Israel’s negative statements do not affect the current dialogue in Cairo,” said an official of the Islamist movement.
A senior American official estimates that “eventually, there will be an agreement to release the hostages.” According to him, the fact that Hamas released videos of prisoners “means that it is clear that they do not want Israel to enter Rafah.”
The main controversy surrounding the deal remains Hamas’s demand for an Israeli commitment to stop the war.
Israel insists on a “stable calm” and not a “permanent ceasefire” and the Rafah operation would go ahead anyway.
