A bizarre incident occurred over the Arctic. An American F-16 intercepted two Russian bombers that were being escorted by 2 fighter jets.

The Russian planes do not appear to have entered US airspace, but the US F-16 jet was raised for a rather reconnaissance mission. Rather, it was simulated as realistically as possible a nuclear interception exercise.

Two Tupolev Tu-95 strategic bombers of the Russian Aerospace Forces (RuAF) were intercepted off Alaska by a US F-16 fighter jet of an “aggression squadron”.

Interestingly, the F-16 that intercepted the Tu-95 also wore the distinctive paint scheme found on some Russian and Chinese aircraft units, such as the Su-34, Su-35S or J-20.

It is not known whether the task assigned to the F-16 “aggressor” was deliberate or coincidental. However, given the F-16’s ability to keep abreast of enemy technology and tactics, the latter seems unlikely.

The F-16 in question belongs to Alaskan Attacker Squadron 18. It was armed with two AIM-120C/D advanced medium-range air-to-air missiles (AMRAAMs) on the wingtips and two AIM-9L/M/S on the outer pylons.

The Tu-95 remained above international airspace and did not stray into American skies. This was stated by the Russian Ministry of Defense (RuMoD). The US did not complain of an airspace violation.

The US Air Force uses the F-16 – in addition to the F-35 – as part of “aggressor squadrons”, which stage and simulate combat or intercept enemy aircraft. With Russia and China as the main military rivals, the units replicate their technology and possible tactics, working closely with the Intelligence Community (IC) to obtain the latest information available.

“Aggressive” F-16 planes intercept Tu-95 “aggressive” planes

Officially, it was stated that “two Tu-95ms long-range bombers” carried out a “routine flight over the international waters of the Bering Sea, near the west coast of Alaska”. Su-30SM fighter jets served as “combat escort”. During the flight, which lasted “more than 11 hours”, the long-range bombers were “escorted by fighter jets of foreign countries” along “certain stages of the route”.

“Long-range aviation pilots regularly fly over international waters in the Arctic, the North Atlantic, the Black and Baltic Seas and the Pacific Ocean.”

The official video showed a Tu-95 taking off in dark conditions, most likely at midnight or early morning. The other Tu-95 is also seen from the cockpit.

A statement from the North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD) stated that it “detected and tracked four Russian military aircraft operating in the air defense identification area of Alaska.”

Along with the 2 Russian bombers flew 2 Russian SU-35 and SU-30 planes.

“The Russian aircraft remained in international airspace and did not enter US or Canadian sovereign airspace. This Russian activity in Alaska’s ADIZ occurs regularly and is not considered a threat,” the statement added.
