During this iteration, Neptune Strike (NEST) includes military contributions from Albania, Bulgaria, Denmark, France, Germany, Greece, Italy, Norway, the Netherlands, Poland, Romania, Spain, Turkey, Sweden, the United Kingdom, and the United States.

This will be Sweden’s first NEST since joining the Alliance.

Among the main naval units involved, we can mention the French aircraft carrier FS Charles de Gaulle (R91), the Italian aircraft carrier ITS Cavour (C550) and the Spanish aircraft carrier Juan Carlos I (L 61). The Turkish LHD TCG Anadolu (L 400) also participates in the naval activities.

This spring, although not under NATO operational authority, for the first time Turkey will participate with an expeditionary strike group that will include amphibious forces.

In addition, NATO will establish and operate a forward command element (FCE) aboard a floating unit to demonstrate its ability to deploy mobile and self-sufficient command elements – anywhere, anytime.

Also, for the first time, the French Navy will transfer authority for the aircraft carrier Charles de Gaulle and its affiliated units under NATO command for the duration of NEST.

The primary objectives of NEST are to exercise NATO’s ability to maintain freedom of navigation and manoeuvre, to secure strategic maritime choke points, to conduct deterrence and vigilance activities, and to enhance interoperability between allied and partner nations through air and land integration missions to advance NATO’s capabilities to conduct multi-domain operations across multiple Joint Operational Areas (JOAs).

Missions in Romania as well

During NEST, NATO will control units that will operate throughout the Mediterranean and Adriatic Sea, but also air units will fly throughout Europe (performing air-to-air refueling), culminating in firing missions in the Baltic Sea and firing ranges in Poland and Romania.

Multi-domain operations encompass all of the interrelated maritime, air, land, space, and cyber activities to advance and combine their respective capabilities to achieve advantages on the battlefield.

Neptune Strike (NEST) is a long-planned activity conducted in accordance with international laws and standards and will take place from April 26 to May 10, 2024.

With the execution of Neptune Strike, the Alliance proves that it is capable of dealing with any threat from any direction faster, more persistently, and with a more capable and powerful unit than ever before.
