In a world parallel to reality, Klaus Iohannis pushes ahead with his personal projects. The disease of mad sinecure seems to have taken his mind completely. He now wants to head the European Commission. Politico is used, the newspaper which, among other things, chronicles the world of Brussels. High-level “sources” are being tongue-tied, that is – you see, Ursula and Borrell have leaked to the press that Iohannis has a chance. Well, I roll over the doll, “he has the first chance”. So say the unknown, but important, informed and quoted sources.
Iohannis, who is going to say, goes from peak to peak. From the head of NATO to the head of the Commission. He shakes the rules, defies customs, ignores his own inadequacy. In the ten years that they had him as president, the Romanians did not know for a second that they were led by someone capable of leading both NATO and the government of Europe. What a revelation!
And following this discovery, a series of stupid and servile statements begins: we all want a Romanian to reach such an important position, it is in Romania’s interest to have a representative at the top of European politics, it is a pride for all of us , it is a prestigious achievement, Romania will benefit from the support of a Romanian, etc. Well, these phrases are “du mécanique plaqué sur du vivant”, a kind of pancake filled with piones, which you’d better not bite into.
Because Romania did not benefit from the support of Iohannis even when it had him as president, ten years on the edge. Then, 70% of Romanians do not trust him and over 60% hate him. Why would it be a pride to see him perched at the head of the EU? Why would it be in Romania’s interest to have Iohannis at the top of NATO, when he was at the top of the army for ten years and today we are the most exposed, most disarmed and most deprived of human resources in the entire eastern flank? Where would be the prestige of being represented by an ignoramus who forces rules respected by all, cracks the traditional unanimity of the North Atlantic alliance, seeks support from Orbán and Erdogan, and hopes to get something for himself from blackmail? Where would the pride be when an incompetent person in the country ends up showing his worthlessness abroad?
With Iohannis desperate to solve his sinecure, Romania has a bigger reputational problem than the politicians who sing to the president imagine. This is because his desperate insistence engages the state with all its institutions, with the Government, with Parliament, with diplomacy, the army, Services and Justice. Practically, Romania forces international gallantry with a second-hand product, invoking military loyalty, farmers’ sacrifice, political servility and general economic damages, assumed heroically in the context of the Ukrainian crisis. Everything the country has that is best in the pile of bad deeds is thrown into the game. All the expensive labor of the Romanian people is spent on the account of Iohannis’ madness to find a high-level protocol.
And some are proud of this, they feel that there is prestige here, they know that it is in Romania’s interest. It’s the story of stupidity, word for word.
