A little-known island is one of the strangest destinations in the world. Known as the ghost island, few people manage to get here to visit it.

Ghost Island, the strangest destination in the world

In 1887, the Mitsubishi conglomerate initiated an ambitious project. The leadership decided to build a small city in Nagasaki Bay, intended to house all the workers involved in the underwater coal mining – a vital resource in the industrialization process.

When the city was inaugurated, it was so isolated that the inhabitants were only allowed to leave it with special approval. The schools were located right in town, and the only way for adults to relax was to go to a bowling alley.

In addition, there were no sources of fresh water on Hashima Island, so water had to be brought from the mainland. However, not only Japanese laborers lived on this island, but also Chinese and Korean slaves.

These people were brought by force and subjected to hard labor until 1945, at the end of the Second World War. Although slavery was abolished, coal mining continued long after that until 1974, when the reserves ran out.

This was the period when Hashima was abandoned by its more than 5000 inhabitants. As a result, the city gradually became a ruin, attracting those interested in abandoned places.

No visitors were allowed for a long time

However, for many years, until 2009, visitor access to the ghost island was prohibited. Currently, a health check is still required before getting there, as the waters around the island are not calm.

As a result, those who suffer from seasickness may experience difficulties. However, Hashima Island continues to be the ideal place for those who are passionate about mystery and unusual places. This island covers more than 60,000 square meters.

Left behind are abandoned blocks and various facilities used by the residents who lived in the city over time. Buildings abandoned by nature create a post-apocalyptic atmosphere, according to atlas-geografic.net.
