“The expansion of the practice of NATO’s joint nuclear missions – regardless of which country or countries would join those that already take part in this practice – has a purely destabilizing character. And in fact threatening,” Ryabkov claims in an interview for TASS, a Russian state news agency.

The Russian Deputy Foreign Minister also claims that the practice of joint nuclear missions by NATO member states near Russia’s borders exacerbates security threats.

“All those politicians who are now enthusiastically discussing such a scheme in Poland and beyond, for their own reasons, must understand: moves in this direction will not contribute to Poland’s security, but the respective facilities will certainly become a target. They will be at the forefront of our military planning,” he says.

Serghei Riabkov referred to the discussions taking place regarding the deployment of NATO nuclear facilities in Poland.

Poland, under the shelter of the nuclear umbrella

In an interview published on Monday by the Fakt daily, Polish President Andrzej Duda said that Warsaw and Washington are discussing the possibility of deploying nuclear weapons in Poland within the “nuclear sharing” program of the North Atlantic Alliance.

“Russia is increasingly militarizing Kaliningrad. Recently, it moved its nuclear weapons to Belarus,” the Polish president emphasized.

Poland, a NATO member country and firm supporter of Ukraine, borders both the Russian enclave of Kaliningrad and Belarus, whose leader, Aleksandr Lukashenko, is an ally of the Kremlin. Kaliningrad became a Russian enclave when Lithuania declared independence following the breakup of the Soviet Union in 1991.

In June 2023, Russian President Vladimir Putin confirmed that he had deployed tactical nuclear weapons in Belarus, a country located between Russia, Ukraine and three NATO member states, namely Poland, Lithuania and Latvia.

Despite its nuclear actions and rhetoric, Moscow’s leadership still blames the West for seeking a nuclear confrontation.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov claimed on Monday that the military support received by Ukraine from the US, Great Britain and France is pushing the world to the brink of a direct confrontation between the world’s biggest nuclear powers. Ukraine is actually being supported to withstand and possibly repel the full-scale Russian military aggression launched by Putin on February 24, 2022.
