Two members of the Republican Party said that the president of the US Congress, Mike Johnson, intends to submit to a vote, after April 9, the draft law on American aid to Ukraine, reports the BBC.

US Congressional Intelligence Committee Chairman Mike Turner said in an interview with CBS that Johnson has repeatedly expressed his support for Ukraine, including in conversations with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy.

He expressed hope that Congress would pass legislation to provide Ukraine with a new aid package soon after returning from the Easter recess. “The Speaker has been very clear that when we come back, this will be our next priority on the agenda,” Turner said.

Another Republican, Mike Lawler of New York, told CNN that Johnson assured him the bill would be reviewed soon. “I spoke to him directly,” the congressman said. “I will not go into the details of this conversation, but I am confident that [Johnson] will bring the law before Parliament and we will be able to vote.”

The US Congress returns from its Easter recess on April 9 and will remain in session until April 22, when it is scheduled to go back on a week-long recess. According to Turner, the law on aid to Ukraine should be voted on before April 22.

At the same time, as the American press writes, it is not clear at the moment in what form the Congress could approve the assistance for Ukraine.

Earlier, some Republicans linked the allocation of new funds to Kiev with strengthening the security of the southern borders and tightening the fight against illegal immigration. Now, part of the Republican Party is proposing to finance aid to Ukraine by cutting other budget expenditures. Former White House chief Donald Trump, who is running again for the presidency, also said that money should be allocated to Ukraine in the form of loans.

In addition, according to the press, the most radical Trumpist wing of the Republican Party (especially Marjorie Taylor Greene) is threatening to impeach Johnson if he brings the Ukraine aid bill to a vote. In this case, he may be saved by members of the Democratic Party, where a large majority favor renewed support for Kiev.

A bill to support Ukraine, Israel and Taiwan totaling $95 billion (about $60 billion of which goes to Kyiv) has already been approved by the Senate, but is still stalled in the House of Representatives due to the position to supporters of former President Donald Trump and President Mike Johnson, who they appointed.

Ukrainian and Western officials acknowledge that the delay in US military aid is already affecting Ukraine’s position on the battlefield.
