A Russian Su-35 fighter jet crashed Thursday off the Crimean port of Sevastopol, the region’s pro-Russian governor said, according to Reuters.

The pilot managed to catapult to safety and was rescued from the water, the governor of Sevastopol, Mikhail Razvozhayev, also said. Images of the moment the burning plane crashes into the sea have been posted on social media.

Earlier, Russian Telegram channels wrote that a Russian Su-35 fighter jet crashed near Sevastopol. It was not clear what caused the incident, with some sources talking about the fact that the plane was shot down by Russian anti-aircraft systems.
